CIVIC DUTY

It is confession time. I voted for every woman on the ballot. Someone once said "women should stay in the house. "Then a sharp gal said "and the Senate and Supreme Court also". So, agreeing to that I voted for every woman who was running for office in Westville.Knowing the odds of them all winning I hope just one makes it to the Village board. I used to tell people I came from a mixed marriage. Yep...Dad was a Republican and mom was a Democrat. I think basically it started because she didn't like one candidate and he was gung ho for theman. The only time she didn't vote was the time he didn't go to the polls either. I doubt she cared much for politics but when she didn't care for someone she did her duty. as far as working the polls I have worked since 1955. when I was a pollwatcher or precinct worker it wasn't so bad but the good ole days as an election judge was notthat good. You had to appear bout 4:30Am and work almost 24 hours. I remember well when Richard Nixon was running, the turnout was so great and we had to count each vote by hand,Each office and each vote. I didn't get home until after 5:30AM the next day and I was paid $25.One day a water pipe burst and the pols were flooded. We were in a basement and they moved us upstairs. Another time one of the workers fainted and was taken out by ambulance. Another time a dog followed a child to school and was curious about us so decided to join us. We didn't let him vote. He wasn't registered !
